Of course its an underrated car, no doubt about it. The problem is image.....
Sorry if this comes accross as sexist, but the car modification industry in this country is
mostly propped up by 17 - 25 year old fellas buying performance parts for small cars (Corsas, Novas, 205/206's, etc).
As has been said before, all of these cars have been marketed towards that target group with a sporty model.
Nissan were late to respond to this with the Micra and by the time they did (with the Super S/SR models in the early 90's) the Micra had become known as a car for women/old people/learners, just like the lower-spec Corsas/Saxos, etc are.
So chances are if you asked most 17 - 25 year old fellas, if they'd choose a Corsa, Saxo or a Micra, they'd never choose a Micra because it never had a chance to gain a "credible" image to them.....Just my opinion anyway.
Personally, I couldn't give a crap about all that, because image doesn't bother me and I choose to look at factors like price, economy, reliability, etc and if I can have a bit of fun with the car along the way, then great.
Also, having a modified Micra is a great conversation starter just because its so different. I like to be different
