WANTED: 1.3 gearbox + questions.

hi as some may no i got a new super s and i had it out at my uncles n put up the ramp, it seems my passenger drive shaft is leaking oil from it n it got a weird whining noise as it revs, ive been told this is my idler gear.

wat i wana no is does anyone have a spare gearbox about i could have in goos condition?

plus wat is an idler gear n its purpose?

thanks alot pepper :D

sounds like it could be the clutch release bearing. not a hard job to do if it is. they are quite common on nissans in general to start whining/squeeling.
is the driveshaft leaking oil or grease, if it's leaking grease it is just a case of changing the cv boot, if it is oil then it just needs the driveshaft oil seals changing. again, this is quite easy if you are competent enough. a haynes manual will cover both these.

Would not be the release bearing if it makes a whining noise when revving. As said, it could possibly be the idler gear.

Easier to just get a new box.

Although saying that, I simply cannot diagnose a gearbox problem properly without hearing it.

If the noise goes when you press the clutch in, then its probably the mainshaft bearing, a replacment box is cheaper than a new bearing+fitting.

sorry i know it is idler gear as my uncle told me n we talked bout doin seals etc n he said even if we do it then the whine will still be there so best to get a box, plus if i do it this way i can get a lightend flywheel n uprated clutch done all in 1 go :D

thanks for replies n can u explain the purpose of an idler gear?

n does anyone have 1 spare?

:D

EDIT if i rev out of gear nothin happens only wen i rev ie goin through gears to 70mph it whines through all gears :(

Idler gear? A gearbox doesnt even have one? Its always the bearings that go, there are 6 of them in a micra box, 2 on the diff 2 on the main shaft and two in the layshaft. The clutch end mainshaft ball bearing is usually the one to go, and when it really lets go makes a hell of a noise and oil can leak out through it.

cheers ed im jus lookin for a new box need 1 asap want it fixed i hate the noise

1 more question u recon it will be ok to drive still? all gears are still there n seem ok?

thanks for fast responses :D

It will fail eventually, usually leaks oil first. It can be totally random as to how long they do last tho.

well thanks ed i suspect it will only get worse etc but hey jus wat u expect from ebay :( but still a good buy will be a good car to fix up n i will start with the box :D

Gearboxes do have idler gears. It is inbetween the layshaft and reverse gear....

Ok a minor point, some people call the actual reverse gear an "idler reverse gear" which is technically correct, and does infact sit on a reverse idler shaft, but this has nothing to do with any noise a gearbox would make whilst in drive, as ofcourse unless in reverse its never even engaged. For people interested see image.. The cog sitting on its own on the lower left is reverse gear.. Its in between the mainshaft and layshaft.
