Got a new P4 chip for free (no "AMD is better" please), was using 2GHZ 256kb cache, this one is 2.66GHZ 512kb cache (any upgrade for free is ok with me)

but look at this

There's no jumpers on MB to change and no BIOS options, so why's it still saying the above?

download the latest BIOS for your motherboard. im not familier with intel (because AMD is better jks) so im not sure if that is normal or not.

go to start the run>then type "dxdiag" with out quotes and hit enter then do a screenshot

Could 2GHZ be the MB limit? but then it wouldn't detect 2.66GHZ right?

it says 2.66ghz in the image!?

Also, that dxdiag crap doesnt always work! on my system it says the program is too big to fit in memory

It sees the chip as 2.66GHZ but I'm assuming the 1.99GHZ underneath is what it's running at, just like it did with teh 2GHZ chip did

check stuff like fsb speed etc and make sure your cpu and motherboard are the same speed, you might find the fsb on the cpu is higher than the motherboard which will limit you ghz

Your ram is running at 200mhz, for 200mhz FSB x 10 to get 2ghz.

You need the ram running at 266mhz x 10 to get the potential 2.66ghz.

Basically, your ram is '100mhz' and it needs to be '133mhz'.

Can you check the ram specs?

Now that I don't know how to do, as far as I know the MB/BIOS should be auto setting

it's all pc133 RAM

ram shouldnt change it maybe the voltage rail to the cpu is underpower

ram can definatly change it, make sure its running at 133mhz in the BIOS!

it could just be the CPUs clock speed isnt the same as its 'actual' speed, same as the AMDs, and therefore everything is fine

RAM defo is, there's very little that can be changed in BIOS for RAM and CPU either.

Oh well, it does seem better and faster though

im pretty sure intel rate chips on actually speed rather then a performance rating. Not too sure what that could be, ill have a think. You tried any intel forums yet? That would be the best place to ask.

you need bios version P12 or greater, the max speed that board supports apparently is 2.60 GHz.

It would help to know the model and make of the MB or at least the model and make of the PC if it was bought from a large retailer.

I cant believe there's no settings that can be changed in the bios...But then again thats Intel for you.
