Well its coming! 1st July 2007 i think and about time too. What do you think though?

definitely, im a smoker but yet i agree to the plan as its a good help to wannabe quiters like myself. hopefully without friends and family smoking, i can eventually stop as well.

This is not a personal attack on smokers but they are simply drug users! Not saying they're bad people as the stereotype drug user is, but just like the way alcohol is controlled so should smoking but smoking harms other people in the area. The only way to really stop people smoking is by making it harder for them to do it!

My mom has smoked for years and now her work has banned it from even in the car park (which is huge), the smoking room is being removed, has not been well recieved but thats just peoples fear of change and breaking the habit!

Good luck to the new law and all those planning on quitting!!

We already have it in Scotland and its the best thing to have ever happened. Can go out and not come back with a headache or stinking of smoke from other peoples bad habit.

It'll be good for ex-smokers like me who get tempted back into the pit now and again, always through drink! And nice not to stink.

But I hate the nanny state telling people what to do, and hope the pubs won't fill up with irritating people who previously never went to them!

Absolutely 100% agree with it!!! There is nothing worse than coming home from a pub and stinking of smoke. I look forward to the day when I can go to one of my local favourite pubs which usually stinks and enjoy a drink with people not smoking. The way I see it, and no offence to anyone who smokes on here, but its totally stupid putting a white stick in you mouth which does you no good whatsoever, and risking yours and those around you's health. Bring it on I say hehe. :D Best thing the government have introduced.

I dont think that'l happen. I mean, many pubs have already implemented a smoking ban, but the people that said they would go if that happened still dont go.

Im a non smoker, i have asthma and hate the smell of it, but i still choose to go to places that have it. It will be great however to go out to the same places and not suffocate or stink of smoke.

Same here, I even had to give up working in a bar because the smoke was too much for me!

"It's people's choice to smoke. What about people who just want to relax with a smoke and a drink?" said 20-year-old Freya Eden.

And what about the people who wana relax without having to breathe in other people's smoke!!! Its also people's choice not to smoke and those people do not wish to breathe in your smoke!!! GRR!!! Really annoys me when people do that anyways, stand right next to you and blow the smoke towards you. Can you tell this subject really annoys me!!! Smoking is gay end of lol. Bring on the ban,

She seemed a bit dappy from some of the other comments she came out with!

its good for both smokers and non-smokers, full stop! there really isnt anything to argue about like that girl in the article. cigarette is indeed just like any other lethal drugs, cocaine etc is no worser by comparing death rates.

coming out of a smoker's mouth, i would like to see cigarettes class as illegal drugs in the near future. it'll stop me from smoking and stop innocents from suffering.

Couldn't agree more Adam!!!

Cigarettes are the only LEGAL substance that used properly will kill you!!!

I know you could include alcohol in that statement, but alchol has recomended guidlines on daily consumption for it to be safe!!

Tobacco is worse than cocaine imo, it is more addictive and causes more damage to your body through long term use. At 43 I've never smoked and never will, I've seen the damage that its done to my friends and family having lost a few to cancer and heart disease over the years, they're both horrible ways to die.

Bring it on!!! I used to smoke, but only coz everyone else i knew did!!! It's a disgusting habit and it's an out of control problem. The sooner they inforce it the better. Jan 1st is my 1st year quitting anniversary!!! LOL

Nice one hun, Wish I could do it, only time I can stop is when I'm with a woman that doesn't smoke. lol

Encourage each other to quit! New years or something, both decide to stop.

Ems is living proof people can just stop and not need it. All those that say they do are just weak & use it as an excuse. You'l probably feel better knowing you've done it without therapy, nicotine patches etc aswell!!

Seriously tho Alan, to some people it is very hard. Coz at the end of the day, it is an addiction. I struggled, but not nearly as much as others i know. Some people start shaking and all sorts just coz they need another fag!!

But thats all in the mind! your body doesnt need nicotine etc. I mean you werent born with a boob in one hand and a fag in the other! lol. i dont know what its like to be addicted to it, and maybe it is harder to stop than i think, but alot of people imo seem to find an excuse when they cant kick the habit, instead of trying hard enough.

I dont particularly mind. I'm around smokers alot, it doesnt bother me at all.

I agree with Arnie on this one. Ollie if you wanted to stop badly enough you would... end of. Its all just lack of will power, and taking the easy way out.

smoking is the most pointless thing in the world. ive lost a family member due to them smoking and getting cancer, so im all for the ban.

you dont need to smoke so why do it, stop smoking and save the money you would use for cigs for a month then see how much money you have at the end

Smoking is a choice, this is like stopping people from drinking. There's no point to people drinking but people do drink. Drinking is very expensive and excessive drinking leads to illness. Yet I dont see bans being raised for drinking too. I am not a smoker, but at the end of the day people smoke end of story.

Totally support this Ban, I'm sick and tired of being out in pubs and public places, breathing in smoke from people around me smoking.

In response to the above, smoking and drinking may well be a choice, but at least if someone was drinking next to you and getting drunk in the process you wouldn't be put under the same influence, this is simply not the case with smoking.

Yes there are times when you could move away or ask the person to move away from you, but this can not always happen. If someone is in the same room as you, you will still breath in there smoke which is simply not acceptable to people who choose not to smoke.

The interesting part will be the inforcement of the law and will it work!!!

The strange thing is about this ban.

I am a casual smoker, a lot of my friends are smokers, and we all support this 100%, it just goes to show that even the smokers would like a smoke free pub, lol.

damm goverment. thats my money making scheme out the window of having the only non smoking pub in town.

but on a serouis note i'm all for the ban.
as for the addiction, i know nothing about. i made a promise to my grandad never to smoke and thats a promsie i'm taking to the grave. but if they ever out law chocolate i'll be starting a war.

the choice should be down to the owner of the individual pub, club etc this ban could possibly lose buisness to these places. Then the customer to pick and choose where to go for a drink and could avoid people who are smoking.

What if they forced a rule upon the country that you couldnt go into certain pub without being a smoker. its equally ridiculous and theyre would be a public uproar.

What if you are the owner of pub etc you couldnt sit in your own place and have a fag. you have to sit outside your own home or in the back. Its like making it illegal to smoke in your own home.

Personally i dont know what everyone is banging on about. How much time do you spend in a petrol station, or at work inhaling much deadlier fumes that 2nd hand smoke. Its like enforcing the public to where dusks mask when filling up theres car, as long as it benefits the majority of people why should they have a choice in it. The goverment just caves in to ridiculous demands that dont actually benefit a great deal to the people that are demanding it.

Yeah thats a valid point - but my comment was aimed at Fordy's earlier post. Based on why people smoke, I compared it to drinking and its actually not that much different.

I've worked in a few pubs where the land lord and lady also lived there, so I know quite a bit about this issue and my sister owned a shop with a flat above.

The downstairs the pub or shop or whatever is the pub, the upstairs is your own personal place! Using the property upstairs you must have seperate cooker than the pub seperate dishwasher, seperate sinks, seperate fridges. The downstairs area is not there, it's a public place. They must have fire risk assesments done of the public area! but not of their own home UPSTAIRS, if they want to smoke they go upstairs.

I work in a bar, and we've introduced no smoking till 7pm when most kids are out, and I also refuse to serve ANYBODY that is smoking at the bar, I am asthmatic, I'm fed up of having to clean ash trays, I'm also fed up of going home stinking of peoples smoke!

If they want to kill themselves with cancer sticks, then they should do it outside, intsead of killing everybody else in the process.

Something i wish i knew earlier was that if you smoke, u can pass on disease traits/genes down to your grandchildren, even if your children didn't smoke :(

Well said that man!!! Some of the examples that people are coming up with though are utter rubbish. Smoking is nothing like drinking... like Kev said the people drinking around you don't pass on illnesses from passive drinking!!! We need to fill up our cars, and subsequently may inhale a few petrol fumes, we need to go to work, and again may subsequently inhale some fumes, we don't need to smoke!!! I can't see why people can't grasp the concept that those little sticks that you put in your mouth do you no good whatsoever, they kill you and those around you... its totally pointless and a total waste of money!!! Places aint gunna lose business cos of it, as the majority of people want smoke free pubs.Going out will be an overall nicer experience when the ban is introduced.

I know a good friend who is a smoker, and he agrees with it, on the basis that he can't be bothered standing outside alone in the cold smoking, so he's going to quit

If emissions from smokers are lower..... Can we drive better more? :p

(Twas a joke.. I know cigarettes dont really contribute to global warming.. Or at least.. I dont think so :S)

This is just all wrong, the first paragraph would never work, you would only be able to go out with either smokers or non-smokers, the second has already been addressed and as for the third, I spend about 2 minutes a week filling up may car, compared to a night out ~ 5 hours, there are also rules about safety in the workplace. How, in any way, is this ridiculous - and to say that every single person who goes to a pub without breathing in second-hand smoke all night is just stupid.

Unless of course you were being sarcastic...
