Noise when braking (but not brakes?)

Dear all,

2009 K12, done about 103k, major service in March this year.

Both before the service (only sometimes) and after (definitely every day now) the car makes what can best be described as a grinding sort of noise when coming to a stop. It doesn't happen when braking, but when reaching about 5mph and about to stop.

I did mention a different noise before the service; they said one of the calipers was slightly seizing and I had it fixed. That noise has stopped but this one hasn't. Been to a couple of garages who said your brakes are fine, but they can't identify the noise source (admittedly only one put it on the ramps for a brake check, the other just visually inspected and drove it)

I'm quite satisfied it's not the brakes, but still want to identify what this is - i don't want a potential safety issue. Looking around on here for similar threads could it be CV, ball joints, bushes, wishbone? I'm just throwing out words as haven't a clue what half these things mean !! I did have my suspension arm changed back in December too, as it was an MOT advisory with the "slight play on ball joint"

Thanks

cv's go clunk in the corners, won't be that.
ball joints rattle on bumps, won't be that.
wishbones, could be rear bushing is dead, but other noises would be more prevalent.
drop links, but again not just when braking.
subframe mounts, rear one, possible, movement when accelerating would be maxed by engine noise. wouldn't be a grinding noise though. in fact non of these would be.

Grinding noise suggests rotating element, so rear drums, front driveshafts, hubs, brakes.
concentrate your efforts there, if you can narrow where the noise is to front or back that would be helpful.
I suspect your rear shoes are worn and something is making contact with the drum.

May I suggest that for peace of mind, you get it to your local car repair/MOT workshop that will be fully competent & experienced too quickly & efficiently diagnose any issues based on your comments?

Good luck.

Best to visit a MOT station and put the wheels on a rolling road using brakes you or the mechanic will have various ways of narrowing down this elusive grinding noise when braking! ;)
