How much smoke, is TOO much smoke?

Hey guys

I finaly managed to get another engine in the black sr after our failer with pollyp's.

Only problem is it seems SLIGHTLY smokey. Even once warm, though it seems like steam more then anything. Doesnt realy smell of anything.

Im just setting up for MOT and i dont want it to fail on emissions....

PS. Shall post pics of the progress through the engine change to the 3rd engine if anyones interested. (Y)

If it was burning oil it would have blue smoke right?

this looks kinda like steam, but it doesnt smell of much. (i heard if it was anti freeze it would have a sweet smell)

I had a look through sparkplug holes with a torch into the pistons and they seem dry.

Although it had been raining (quiet abit) when the engine and exhuast where out. Im hoping its just water or something burning off...

headgasket? piston rings (but you will see a slight blue smoke). try revving it quite hard if blue smoke comes out, probably will need a oil change or piston rings.

clear smoke could be a cracked block...

but i hope not, cheers.

still steamin eh. could it be residual coolant and water vapour in the cats & backbox steamin off? mine always steams slightly during/after rain cos its cold. i read somewhere that prolonged misfiring or burning oil/coolant can damage the cats? maybe get a mobile mechanic or local garage or someone with an emissions reader to test the exhaust before the mot?

You may be right. My dad said the same thing. I tired it again and seemed a little less but wen it warms up its there. It doesnt smell of anything like i said. And it isnt blue at all. Same colour and beviour like steam or like warm breath in cold temp.

I kept the engine running on idle for about 30 mines, hardly anything came out of the exhuast. Just when i rev, aggressively and let go there is visiable smoke, whether thats OK i dnt know. I did check the pistons through the sparkplug whole to see the pistons. Not bone dry but same level of very mild moisture on all pistons. Sparkplugs where clean (no oil residue)

I may take it to MOT and hope for the best. (Y)

i have the same thing happening on my 1.3 it seems like water vapour and isnt always visible at mot's the tester just told me to go and roast down the motorways after the test as the emissions were just in order and he even done the hard rev test and saw slight blueish smoke said it wasnt that bad though
sulur is it intermitent like now an then as thats what happens on mine looking like water vapour but i dont loose any water from my system as i havent needed water top ups but oil is loosing a top up a week is needed and i can hear bubling at the matrix when turning of the car sometimes
and yes the engine change photos worth droping on us thanks in advance

I havnt had the engine long enough to see if I'm loosig anythig as such r-reg-sr. Yes it comes when warmed up but then comes and goes. Has anyone tried k-seal?

Will post pics soon

was going to ask that about the sealers may gunk up things to seal?
worth a go before major engine work??

^it'll be running rich when its sooty black. engine usually runs richer when cold to warm up faster but if its still poofing black when warm and drinking fuel, check ur lambda sensors working fast enough

Btw just to let you guys know the car passed MOT. even emmisions so :) I think i was just overreacting abit becuase of what happen before with pollyp

Cheers for all your help guys. And pollyp, gona go scrpayard today and hopfuly find myself the a clutch clip :p

i'm sure you'll find one if the yard has any micras. i usually just grab n go for such small items like screws, clips etc.

i hardly think they'd bother to check for a tiny push-rivet or screw thats afew penny and usually thrown scattered around the rubble ground

Hi pollyp
I've turned dumb, where is the sensor located?

And SuluR glad to hear you passed your MOT.

Cheers buddy. Im still getting that strange sencation as if the car isnt giving all ats got, maybe only 75% 80% odd.

Any ideas?

PS, your lambda sensor is on the manifold. Under the splash gaurd me thinks
