Few question I have

1)
hey all jus a few questions i want clearing up, basically if anyone knows what a reasonable price to replace the front windscreen would be as it is crapped quite badly, therefore no MOT.
2)
also after having done the 1.6 conversion id like to know whether or not my drive shafts would be ok: there holding out very well but whether they'll pass or not: would i need them made from scratch.
3)
im using the primera radiator but engine seems to be running very hot, is this because the rad is restricting the air flow to the engine as it takes up the whole front space or could it be that im not running a thermostat which i dont think it could be?

be happy to no anyones opinions, responses

THANKS ScOpEz

the thermostat just makes the block warm up quicker, when it,s closed the coolant circulates to the heater matrix only, when it,s open it,s like having no thermostat.
if the fan,s kicking in your setup should be fine

cheers mate for letting me know, only reason for not having one was the previous one was damaged and i havnt got round to getting one, mind u it was a lot more better in the hot weather. now winters oproaching im best to get one i guess.

but yea the fan is kicking in so u reckon it should be fine? just that it felf incredibly hot when i open the bonnet.

any ideas on the other to questions?

Thanks

Windscreen - I got mine done for £100 through a friendly garage, I've heard some people having quotes of £400 as it is apparently a very hard job to do - is it insured? If so, and if you have windscreen cover, then it may be best to get it doen though that as it will only cost you roughly a £50 excess (hopefully).

Driveshafts should be fine as long as there is no play/knocking/split boots.

How hot does it show on a temp. gauge - are you using micra or primera gauges? You could plumb an aftermarket one in to check the temps. You could also wrap/ceramic coat the exhaust manifold to help lower underbonnet temps.

£100 sounds great, dnt think il be able to get for that, but yea its insured only third party though so dnt think im covered for that...was hoping it would be in the region of £200 odd

yea there aint no play, or knocking boots are fine i was jus worried they could be difficult and look at the welding and giv it a no NO! lol as they wernt done professional but by my mate. im using the micra clocks running off the primera loom, i dont have a heat shield on the manifold could that be the reason hence why you suggested to wrap it?

scopes you got msn or anyway i can have a chat with you just ghot some questions on the 1.6 matey and how you mounted yours:)

Hmm, it depends on the examiner really - if the work looks good, then you should be fine.
It is a good idea to get a few quotes befoe you do anything with regards to the windscreen - ask the MOT place how uch it is likely to cost :)
I'm not sure how muh difference the heatshield will make TBH - bear in mind taht the almera/primera engine bay is a bit larger than that of the Micra - it might be worth putting some kind of bonnet vent/louvres in it to aid cooling, but you really should get a gauge into the coolant to see exactly how hot it is running.
Wherebouts in London are you, wouldn't mind having a look at a 1.6 conversion?
Craig

yea got it running now....managed to by pass the nat problem, mind you still got a few bugs to get out of the system ;)

Sure thing mate my email is [email protected], not msn much but email when ever and il write bk soon as possible

will do craig about shopping round for prices ;) and i get what u mean by the smaller engine bay...i could always get a smaller rad to allow more air into the engine bay when driving, but i will look at gettin an after market temp guage to check the heat level. im actually based down in croydon but venture to all parts of london sometimes lol depending on meets i go to, how about u?

Ah, I'm on the other side of London so a bit of a distance.
It's hard to say whether or not a smaller rad is needed - you really need to know how how it's running, but the fat that the Micra rad is so small make me think that a larger rad is a good idea - you could always look into getting on of Matt Humphris twin core copper rads, put a nice big fan on the back of that and you should be running at good temps.
Craig

wel il see how it goes and if worse comes to worse il get a honda rad or somthing like what toney is using on his 1.6...but fan isnt contsantly on so it must be within safe operating temperature. so you live up in north london then? whats ur k11 look like?

Just the standard 1.3 - the D2 coiloevers really are great, though.
Yeah, I'm off the M1 just inside the m25.

There aren't really any regular southern meets, went bluewater uyears ago, but not been for ages - I thought that it got stopped?
Craig

do u not go to southend, enfield, ace caf, guilford or any of them?

Wel my uncle organises proper jap meets at blue water every now and again. the last one was just this sunday gone, but i dont really post it much on here anymore cause no one from MSC ever seems to turn up...but if your interested i'l post it for u next, or if you'd like to go to another meet like i mentioned above then let me know and perhaps we could meet up

scopezwhen it,s open it,s like having no thermostat.

Not soo true, when the thermostat is open it still rstricts the water flow slowing it down and allowing it time to transfer its heat energy to the radiator, then to the air.

Craig

It was stopped then our local club tried to get it going again and did for several months, then once odd !&*£"$%^& popped down the one time bluewater security were down, they took his plate numbers and said nothing about it. The next week we were told were not aloud to ever have car meet at bluewater.

Although we still have a local meet every monday there.

so wrench you say that you and some others have a local meet on mondays at bluewater? why dont you pop down to the next bluewater meet my uncle organises then, its totally fine, no problems with security etc as long as everyone behaves them selves....no chavs basically

I'm definately up for some south meets - that's what the 'community' is supposed to be about, isn't it?

Scopez - post up when the next meet is, I'll try to make it at least.....

for sure mate il deffinatly let you know when the next bluewater one is, there's one evry sunday if your interested up in Enfield, i can always meet you somewhere before hand.. just let me know when your interested in going

Enfield is nearer to me than bluewater - what's the crowd like, I went down Guildford a couple of time an it was ok, but there was a definate undercurrent tht wasn't too pretty.
Craig

enfield is starting to get quite popular, quite a few cars go down there now say roughly a cuple 100 depending on the weather, but there are 3 other modded micra's that go up there which i thought may have been members of MSC but i dont think they are..maybe next week or something we could pop down ?

Tell you what mate PM (you also have my msn, Whipit) me for the next Bluewater meet and ill get it up on our site, everyone will behave there selves, i love chavless meets!

most deffinatly il post it up seeing as ur all interested, have tried before a cuple times but no one has been bothered. like i sed its strictly an enthusiat meet: last sunday had a lot of nice honda's, skylines, evo's so why not some micra ;)

Ask the garagthat is going to be testing it - often, if they are nice, they'll point you in the direction of stuff that is likely to fail it before you take it there.

or better still a garage that you are not going to use, get the advice and then take to anouther because they might look for that fault an fail you was they probs wouldnt check the otherwise.

i thought it was a fail :s - any signs of heat damage or welding marks - could be wrong like but im sure i read that in the manual somewhere

on that testers course i had to go on, 2 of the 3 days were spent telling us what we COULD,NT fail a car on,
if he fails your driveshaft and you contested he would probably get jumped on, testers are allowed so many points, i think it was 30, when they are gone he loses his licence!
if he passes the d/s but does,nt write on white sheet, given with certificate "advise driveshaft welded bla bla" he will also get jumped on!
i think same applies to chassis (note any welding, not on a factory seam, must be continous not tacked!)

frank

wel i did have a word with someone at the garage today about them and he sed its a win win situation, all depends of the MOT person really as in the book it say if drives shafts have damaged s, cv's etc and if they are bent/distored which is the only problem i could have as they have not being professinally done...however he sed they seem ok but jus would advise to get them don properly...anyone no of anywhere i could get this then do let me know thanks
