Cam chain thingy

85000 miles and its rattling, so can I get away with just changing the top one? if so how?
How long is the total job and what other stuff would I need, besides oil?

there,s a little cast stump on the cover that you have to cut or break off winchman (down the bottom)
then you just remove 1 sprocket to free the chain, then fit the chain and remove the tensioner to reset it
takes 1 hr ish

Whats the chances of this making it any better?
I assume I just buy the full kit and just fit the top bits? local bloke has them for £65.
I don't suppose you have any pictures of how to fit it?

Have you had the top timing chain cover off?

A new tensioner might solve this problem.

Whip the cover off the side, you'll need to undo about 10 10mm bolts and remove an engine mount (14mm)
I usually place a small jack under the sump then remove the mount.

The cover should peel away with some help of a screwdriver, get us some pics of the chain, sprockets and the tensioner
Reseal with fresh sealant.

No not had it off yet just concentrated on getting it through the MOT

I used black wickes bathroom sealant. But any instant gasket will also work

Went to an engine place today, he has advised to remove all the belts so I am certain its the cam chain making the noise, so I should do this at the weekend. Friend of a friend will do the chain for £100 If I get the parts, Local Factors sellingb the kit for £65!

Renewing the chain is a far better solution than just patching up

£100 seems reasonable since it's a pig to do.

The seller is a motor factor local to me, now I was a bit concerned about it being so cheap, so asked one of the lads and he has sold loads and never had any issues, apparently the get them direct from the manufacture so can sell them cheap.
Its going in Monday for it to be fitted

Just an update, had the top chain fitted for £50 oil changed too and its much better, so that's a good start
