    i would have 2 filters, one at the opening in the hood and one for the carb... the only problem is, what if wanna open the hood lol... the hood swings towards the front, which would ruin my tubing...i guess some sort of mechanism to seperate the tubing from the hood eh? the other concern i have...

    if you have a multimeter, test that there's power flowing through the the power cord from your car to your headunit... if there's a reading, then you've obviously pinpointed that it's the headunit failing. Since it's from the wreckers, take the case off the headunit and look/smell for burning...
