A bit over secure then! MAC address filtering is good enough on its own

I've observed over 3000 APs whilst war driving, and it's about 50/50 if they used any form of encryption or not. In central London, it is possible to be driving along for long periods listening to a shoutcast station without interruption.

MAC address filtering isn't good enough on it's own - all it prevents is other people associating with the AP, they can still observe all your traffic as it is unencrypted. It's trivial to bypass anyway as the MAC address is plainly transmitted and it is easy to change the MAC address on nearly any wireless card.

WEP isn't great either, again, a determined attacker can crack a 64 bit or 128 bit key in a relatively short period of time. Some manufacturers have taken steps to reduce the vulnerability in WEP, but WPA is a much better option if your equipment supports it.

so do these jus pick up internet signals in the area?

my laptop aleady does it but i cant get very strong signals and it jus disconnects when it feels like it anyways, would one of these be any help in stabalising the signal strength and/or connection?
