Was just wondering if anyone knows ANYTHING about linux or how it compares to windows....advantages/dissadvantages...

the reason is that we have a new laptop at work running linux...and im ment to know about it so i can sell it to customers lol....help much appreshiated :D

Advantages of linux is mainly the spyware/adware virus thing. No one really makes them for linux. But for the average user it's crap.

Main advantage of windows is its capabilites to run nearlly all software.

Windows is the only option for most people, Including myself. Linux is proper crap for my needs.

ok thanks
So briefly...with linux your less likely to get virus/spyware
but downside is that there is hardly any software for it...
Do you know if it needs a Spec to run than say vista? ...

Depends what version of linux its using. There are so many different versions
Redhat
Ubantu
Suse
To name a few. From my linux days I've always thought they required a lot less system requirements than a windows machine. But i been out the Linux game for many a year now.

There are plenty of applications usually bundled with Linux which offer FREE alternatives to office, MP3 players, and many other everyday applications.

It's just I do a lot of Cad work, there's nothing which can rival AutoCAD or Inventor for the Linux OS.

guy

the main difference is that linux is a free operating system.
it suffers far less virus,s and pop-ups etc and hardware detection is a lot better (my printer, modem, soundcard and videocard etc worked without having to load any drivers)
BUT most of your games wont run on it, and if it does,nt detect some hardware of yours, it,s hard to configure the driver (limited support)

Linux is for people who want a headache everytime they connect a device, or want to install a program.

Windows is for people who want a headache following the consequences of downloading lolzorzpornvirus.exe because they thought it was a picture of their friend performing a frontal lobotomy on themselves.

And OSX/apple macs are for rich people who are up themselves.

also you need to know the commands to use it to its full capabalities, and like said before not much software or support for it, mainly best for business'
stick with windows its not bad :p

Have you got some EeePC's in by chance? Because the Linux system on that is pretty good, but it's still a hog compatibility wise.

Windows is a pretty fine operating system. Very stable, yet open. The problem is the user. Also, because it's licensed to 3rd party's to install on their machines, it means that you start getting dodgy hardware and stuff, which creates problems for the OS.

Hence why OSX crashes less. It's much harder to modify and make go wrong, and Apple have complete dominance over what components go in their computers, making sure they have a stable system.

Mandriva is alright but the first thing I did to our EEE at work was make a streamlined XP install (only 150MB i believe) and reinstall it with that on, so much more practical!

Linux is not an operating system, its the bit underneath the OS, the kernel. A linux based Os. The correct term is: GNU/Linunx, that being the kernel (linux) and the tools to make the computer do stuff, GNU apps.

Generally, a suite of apps is available to install. Installing these apps, (packages) is very easy. The software packages available from repositories (places the packages are kept) are nearly always 100% legit & safe. If you stick to the standard repositories a distribution provides, (distribution means a version of gnu/linux), you dont have to worry about virus's at all. Your customers will be able to open a package manager, such a synaptic, search for 'itunes' and install a ipod compatible itunes type app with ease.

gnu/linux distributions are usually very secure. If a security issue is found, a patch will usually be written and made available very quicky.

Thats a sort of general jist.

As for the comparison with windows, I personally much prefer gnu/linux. I watch tv, listen to music, write software, download stuff etc... everyday without issue or concern.

well said mate! the important thing to note on these unix based OS's is that they are incredibly stable (i.e. almost never crash like windows) most businesses use unix based OS's to run key systems such as DNS, anti virus etc mainly due to its stablity (at least we do at my work)

Windows is for the consumer market, Unix based OS's (linux/redhat,ubuntu) etc are really for IT professionals who know what there doing. most consider windows to be superior but that just proves those people know stuff all about computers ;)

unix has been around a lot longer than windows and as far as im concered has been and always will be far superior. the only downfall is that its not as comercial as windows therfore running and getting applications on it is sometimes difficult but that seems to be improving now

linux will run on anything :D i have seen a network card with linux in it :D

but really unless you want a challenge there is no point getting into linux because you have to know all about patching kernals and recompiling binaries, omg and checking your version dependencys, that is alot of fun when trying to install something new

windows? crashing? errrr yeah not since about 98se :|. I literally cannot remember my windows machine crashed out!

Different strokes for different folks i say. Nothing is "better" then the other outright. What one OS does, another doesn't, or doesn't do it as good.

Unix based Operating Systems, are very fast, and VERY powerful, IF, and only IF you know what you're doing with it.

The best of the unix based systems is Mac OS but after that Unix is fairly limited in it's use for servers.

I'm getting a mac in the new year, Jan sales hopefully, but only for image work, but for an average user, with no specific needs, Windows wins, hands down, every time.

Probably for the ease of use. Programs are simple to install, settings are easy to change. There's a large variety of them, support is easily had from elsewhere
