I'm not overly technically minded so i probably won't be able to help 
but is it definitely in easy mode? (as in Not Anti-Hijack mode?)
...or is it completely unresponsive?...I mean, if you press the unlock on your fob twice does it open?
Other than that the only thing i can think is either a fob signal problem (going to the boot, or not as it seems) poss battery?
or as you said a connection or switch fault...it may be worth (if you manage to get it open again) checking the lock mechanism itself
...make sure it hasn't ceased/got stuck/stiff/jamming etc...
