it's a breather you are spot on. I think it goes to a cap and then bolts to the bulk head or similar. a quick check of the manual, I can only find one mention of it and it's a crap image. cable tie it out the way somewhere. :)

Ditch the cage. I did when I did the same thing. I made a set of brackets for mine that pick up the mountingbhiles for the cage.. As long as ot fits in the hole you can make brackets from bits of ali strap. I have a 3d printed so I printed mine.

Jb weld is overkill and as you say, will stick it permantly. With something like 638 you will have a fair bit of time to fix them in place and the bond can still be broken with a wiper puller. Adding a bit of heat with a hair dryer will also break the bond. They are meant to be a taper seat so...
