I recently started studying french. I read through it, if i don't understand it i read it again. I take notes as i go along and there are quizzes at the end of each chapter. I do the quizzes, mark my answers and make corrections just like a teacher would. I find it works quite well.

To give a geeky answer, the force surrounds everything, it takes concentration to make objects "float" and drains energy from a Jedi. They would be too busy concentrating on lifting themselves to steer, so if they didn't crash into a wall then they they could probably fly for about 10 seconds...
