I've already tried disconecting the TPS to see if it helped with the low idle - didn't make any difference. I think there is a fair chance that disconnecting the TPS would solve the problem of sudden high revs - so if that happens again and the car becomes undriveable, I'll give it a go.

Nissan Datascan seems to have the ability to perform various adjustments - one of which is "base idle adjust". I'm sure it's not the same as the full Nissan Consult that you would find at a dealership or Nissan specialist - but a lot cheaper of course.

Sounds like good news. So, if this shows my IAC valve is working correctly, is there any point in me trying to get it off to clean it? Found the throttle stop screw, but I haven't adjusted it yet. Do I turn it clockwise or anti-clockwise to raise the idle?

I think the rear sensor is just there to monitor the health of the CAT - it wouldn't have any effect on performance, or MPG - the front sensor does all the important stuff.

I'll second that - K11's everywhere, plenty of sunshine and 20% income tax - doesn't get much better than that. If it wasn't so expensive to buy a house I would have moved there years ago.
