I guess it's the only option. I can't understand how it wont fit back in and is it possible that the nut was originally supposed to be like that (1/5 of the tread in place and not all the way). Maybe someone has a picture of their gas tank mounting nut position???

Yes, it's one of the two tank holder nuts. Goes through the mounts.

While the body is being welded, i'm fixing up the interior.

That surface rust may come with a nasty surprise. Those two metal sheets are joined forming a V shape and provide perfect conditions for collecting moisture and making rust. The ideal solution would be to cut out both of those parts(lower and side) and patch it with fibreglass or weld it all up.

All is well with this rusting hell!!! ;) Welding has already begun and it should be ready in a week. I'm now wondering instead of sealing those welds with seam sealant just use a thick layer of anti-rust undercoating and that should do the trick. What are your thoughts on that, should I buy the...

I'm seeing a guy tomorrow who could take the job. If he doesn't then i'm looking where to lend or rent all the needed welding gear. The fiberglass is my last resort. Oh and btw i'm in Latvia.

Thanks infinity! But it seems this project is going to a full stop! Today i recieved some terrifying news. A local mechanic who was supposed to do welding, refused to do the work upon detailed inspection. Said that there is to much to be done and suggested i get a new shell. I'm furious now...
