Thanks Mika, but the problem does not manifest when in reverse. Im the meantime I got the car looked at by a garage and they say the diff in the gear box might be what's causing this. Repairing it will likely cost too much to be worth it for such an old car (03).

If it's like in this video, then it's the heat shield and can be easily fixed as Jason suggested. Some people take the shield of entirely without ill effects, I hear.

Well, I've just been told that this grinding noise when I turn could also be caused by the wheel bearing as well, so I guess this will need a bit more investigation.

Right, did not manage to find the ECU fuse, or decide whether that's the wisest thing to do either. I'll let you folks know how the dashcam will work from the ciggy lighter fuse.

I think the ECU might get uninterrupted power between ACC and IGN. I'll try to find the fuse for it and tap into it.

Just FYI - took me a few months to report back - but I am successfully using these bulbs (leds) http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00SK6K7Y0 Not crazy bright, but more than visible and the emitted light is more white-ish, not blue-ish. So far so good.

I managed to fix the heat shield rattle by fixing a hose pipe clip around it real tight. Other people remove it altogether from what I've read, with no ill-effect. HTH
