    Considering a 1.5dci

I call it point and squirt. The DCI has oodles of torque and overtaking is great fun. There is a bit of turbo lag but its manageable. She does eat front tyres for breakfast if you do that too much. Tthere are a couple of basic things to remember about diesel engines, and about turbo engines and...

Having big problems with reliably starting my K12

What worries me here is that the boot opened when the problem started. It could be a short in the wiring. I have had solder joints that were fine when they are cold but dont make contact when hot. Try taking a look behind the fuse box and check for any water damage or corrosion. Or it could be...

    Headlight compatibility

As far as I know all of them fit into the same space with the same fasteners and wiring. There are only some cosmetic changes to the outer lense and inner trim, like chrome or not. I take a very careful look at things like the wiring connectors( size and shape) and at where the mounting nuts...

    Metalic rattle sounds

I had a misaligned starter that was just slightly touching the ring gear on the flywheel. It was more of a pinging sound, but it took me a very long time to find.

    Loud noise

And check your air filter. I once had a filter housing fall off, and the sucking sound was something ridiculous without the filter to dissipate it.

    Loud noise

Check your engine timing. If it only happens when you accelerate and it sounds like a ticking, it means that the timing is out. It can become very expensive, you can burn the valves, or even melt a hole in your pistons. You can also check your engine mounts and see if the engine moves a bit...

    My turbo is goiinnngggg........

Thanks for the reply. This is my first foray into the Diesel ownership world, and it is also the first car I ever bought with a turbo, specifically because I know nothing. Your suggestions for the power increase work well for petrol engines, we had a 2L, 4 cylinder engined puppy that ate a NOS...

    Headlight Removal

Its a body clip. The central part has a taper that when its pushed in the taper pushes plastic "fingers" outwards and it holds the parts together. Almost like a pop rivet. You need to feel for the central part in the back and push it forward, which will allow the "fingers" to become smaller and...

    Metalic rattle sounds

Tried and tested technique for getting rid of funny sounds in all the vehicles I have ever owned. I turn the stereo up. Then when something finally breaks it makes the troubleshooting very simple.

    Micra K12 1.4 Auto - rattle/grinding when cold

Thanks for the update. I will check mine, but I am fairly sure its not my problem. Will keep digging.

    Cold start and engine noise

My dci started difficult too. Killed my battery, but I found that the little plastic bowl to prime the engine with diesel after running it dry, was cracked. It leaked ever so slightly, and I never gave it a second thought. I did some digging and realized that the bowl lets air in while the car...

    Micra K12 1.4 Auto - rattle/grinding when cold

I have a similar issue when I switch the Aircon on. I think its the fan belt tensioner. I feel the vibrations through the gear lever. I took the fanbelt off and started the car, and listened to the sound of silence. Put the belt on again, and it was rattle all over. I have been living with it...

Dashboard:- ABS Light & O/D Light

You will note that the radio also switches off while cranking and then comes back. The systems switch off to protect themselves from voltage spikes caused by the load on the battery. Once the engine is running everything gets checked and its off you go.

K12 EML LIGHT COME ON, DRIVES GOOD AND HAS A NEW TIMING BELT

Did they put the timing belt in correctly? It could be out by one tooth. That would mess up lots of sensors, and the engine timing would be out. Or one of the sensors wasn't connected. Anything could be wrong really. Take it back to the mechanic and tell him/her (politically correct) to fix...

Car won't start after changing battery

Check the fuse right on the terminal. It could have blown, or the wires could have pinched off while you were fitting the terminal. Try disconnecting the battery and re connecting it 30 seconds later. Make sure all the terminals are tight. It is possible to connect enough to give a small amount...

    My turbo is goiinnngggg........

I have a K12 Tekna 3door dci, in South Africa. I have recently been pottering around under the bonnet, and noticed that there is some engine oil in the intake pipe. I serviced it yesterday, and there is a lot of oil in the intake pipe. All the way from the turbo, through the intercooler and to...

    removing fuel

I don't think the pump will run unless the engine is turning. and to be draining fuel while standing next to a running engine, is probably not good. I would just undo the pipe and siphon the fuel out.

    High pitch squealing noise

Check your brake pads. Its possible that they are worn and when the hub deforms just a little bit when turning, the metal part of the pad backing comes into contact with the disk. Or check that there isn't some part of the suspension/ brake assembly touching anything. Pretty muck, jack the car...
