why dont you just take a feed from a light on one of your switches above the radio then the glovebox will be lit only when its dark rather than all of the time that is what we have done and when i get time i will be fitting a very small pin switch to operate the light off the glovebox door

i would check the wiring in the rubber boot that goes between the tailgate and the body ,with the tailgate being opened and closed all of the time the wiring that runs through the boot can snap it may then be shorting out
