agree with arnold above, if the car hasnt had a service in a while its likely that the oil from the crankcase breathing system would have passed through the breather hose onto the air filter.

short circuit somewhere causing it to earth out and blow the fuse, check all the wiring etc around the ignition barrel and engine earth straps

You can use the alternator! On our MOT gas analyser it has a tacho connection that you stick on the battery and it measures the rev's from there. I can remember the instructor talking about this wen i was last at our training centre - but cant really remember what he said!

The reason they ran another diagnostic test was the flat battery could be masking other problems, so charged the battery and then ran the test again - we do it regularly in our workshops - Although repairing without authority was pretty nasty! Daz
