generally,carbon canistors condense excess fuel vapours from expanding tank and put them into the inlet manifold/throttle body, and also act as a measure to stop the vaccuum in the tank as fuel is drawn from it, not that that really answers any more of youre questions O.o ...

engine has been put down the list of priorities, but now starts randomly (or rather, will not start randomly) there seems to be no link between engine hot or cold, or battery charge level, as in it can be running for 15 minutes, swithch of and on and will not start no matter how much i crank...
